Not sure how to prepare? We got your back!

You've seen the magazines. But you know, you aren't a professional model. Perhaps you have a birthday coming up, or always wanted that Boudoir photo shoot. The reasons for each photo shoot are as unique as each individual. But there are ways to prepare.

Step 1. Have a location in mind

Perhaps you would like to do your engagement pictures in a special and meaningful location. Or you want that edgy picture in Times Square at night. Have your location and time if it is important in mind.

Step 2. Pick the vibes and get into character

Know what type of feel that you are going for. This might be to compliment your location, or to intentionally clash with it. Perhaps you want something fun and light. Find your inspiration. If you want, perhaps even a playlist of music to get in the mood. Or create a mood board to help the photographer know what you want.

Step 3. Pick your wardrobe and accessories

You know the place, time if applicable, the feel for what you want. Now it is time to pick the clothes and number of outfits. This can dictate the length of your photo shoot and potential costs so be mindful of number of outfits, as well as the location your want. It you are looking for pictures on the Brooklyn Bridge, how are you going to change? Perhaps swapping out a shirt or a skirt for pants.

Make sure you are well laundered. Iron out those wrinkles and make sure your won't have to rush. If you have multiple outfits, consider how to transport them. Perhaps a garment bag to keep them nice and crisp. The camera will pick up details so also sport the right underwear for your wardrobe selection.

Step 4. Hair, makeup, and personal grooming

You have the perfect location and all the right clothes. Now, how about the hair?! This goes for men and women. Make sure you are well groomed (hair, head, face, and body if it matters to you).

Trim your nails or get them manicured or pedicured. Handle facial hair and other types of hair (such as shaving). And if it is important to you, consider your makeup for the day. If it is professionally done or personally done, make sure to test it out before the big photo shoot day.

Step 5. Assemble props

Do you want large red balloons? Are you going to use a stack of book to celebrate your nursing degree? Whatever you need for your shoot, gather then a day or more ahead of schedule. You don't want to be scrambling looking for items and adding stress to a fun day or hours to your session.

Step 6. Eat & rest well before

Don't let tiredness or being hangry seep into your attitude during a photo shoot. If you have an hour or two scheduled, you might want to make sure you are well fed and rested before your session. Don't let sleepiness, hunger, or dehydration get in the way of your camera time.

Step 7: Communicate your ideas with your photographer

It is important that with all of your thinking and prep work that you communicate your ideas and concept to your photographer. After all this is a collaborative effort. You can convey the feel you wish to have with images from places like Pintreset, Instagram etc. Show them to your photographer but also know your photographer's style as well.

Final Step: Be confident and have a good time

You nailed all of the prep work and even if there is a delay, you can still be fabulous.
